Spicy Mango Salsa
Often what really makes a meal is the bits you add to it. You know, sauces, dips, a bit of coleslaw, that kind of thing. Another example of that is this Spicy Mango Salsa – it is a little different to the normal salsa which is very tomato dominated. Check out how to make this tropical salsa.

What is a salsa?
A salsa is a type of sauce or that’s the literally translation for it! In fact, what we know of as salsa has been around for a long time – as far back to the Aztecs where the original idea for the dish came from. Here in the UK, it is still very much associated with Mexican cuisine and dishes.
There are lots of names for salsa including moles, mojos, chimichurris, sofritoes and recados. All have slightly different ingredients and work to add extra flavour to a dish. You can get it in fresh ‘fresca’ or cooked ‘cruda’ varieties. Texture can be thick or thin and spiciness can be very different.

The classic type of salsa will contain tomatoes and onions with different chillies. Salsa rojo ‘red sauce’ is using a tomato base while salsa verde ‘green sauce’ is made with tomatillos – these are actually a tart green fruit related to the gooseberry and not the tomato! Cilantro leaves are often added, and a hot and spicy version is labelled as ‘picante’.
In addition to being served with tortillas, tacos and breads, they are often served with dishes like quesadillas and enchiladas. But that’s not all – you can add them to eggs, seafood stews, grilled meats and even boiled potatoes. So, once you find a recipe you love, there are loads of ways to use it up.

Recipe tips
This fresh mango salsa recipe is a little different as there’s not a tomato in sight. It has a great mixture of sweet mango and spiciness from the peppers that makes it ideal for pairing with something like a Spicy Black Bean Taco Wrap.
It is also a good addition to grilled cod, with sweet potatoes or even just as a dip for tortillas. You can make it as spicy as you want by increasing or decreasing the amount of jalapeno in there.
