No-Churn Banana Cream Frozen Yoghurt

If you ask me my favourite flavour ice cream, the answer is banana, but it is not easy to get.  In fact, I love banana flavouring in lots of things, just not the actual banana so much!  What I like about this recipe for banana cream frozen yoghurt is that you get all the goodness and taste of the banana with a smooth, creamy consistency and it is a no-churn recipe – so you even need an ice cream maker!

Blender or ice cream maker?

It is true to say that an ice cream maker is a specialist bit of kitchen equipment and a blender can’t do everything it can do.  With a proper ice cream maker, like the one pictured here from Cuisinart (love the colour!) is designed to make frozen ice cream and sorbets, has double insulated walls and different settings to get the perfect results.

But there are ways to make tasty frozen yoghurts with a blender.  Now when it comes to choosing the right blender, the key is to see what you want to do with it.  This recipe uses soft ingredients, so you don’t need to worry about the highest power.  If you want to do jobs like chop up nuts or ice, then you do want a high powered blender for this.

Recipe tips

With this recipe, you can adjust the flavour of the end result by playing with the ratio of Greek yoghurt to cream cheese.  More yoghurt will make it a little tangier while more cream cheese will make it milder and creamy.  You can even try using other varieties of yoghurt in place of the Greek to see what works best for you.

When it comes to the vanilla extract, you can use normal vanilla extract, just know the colour of the frozen yoghurt will be a little different as it is brown.  You can also find clear vanilla extracts which we used here – just watch they are the real thing and not a ‘vanilla flavouring’ or imitation as you might not get the same flavour.

Lastly, you can add a range of toppings if you want to add to the dish – ideas include fresh banana slices, shredded coconut, chocolate or caramel sauce or even crushed nuts.  Have fun!
