Top apple drinks for fall

When it comes to fall foods, apples are always near the top of the list.  While most of the time they are available all year round, there’s something special about that autumn crop.  And this means you can make some of the best apple based drinks with the freshest fruit.

Apple harvest punch

To make this non-alcoholic fall drink, you only need four ingredients and you can always switch to diet or lite versions if you want to reduce the sugar down.  Take a 32 ounce bottle of apple juice (or a carton if that’s what you can get) and a can of berry juice, one cup of orange juice and a litre bottle of sparkling soda water.  You can even use your blender to make a smoothie version of the berry juice if you want the drink to be a little thicker.

Spiced Apple Smoothie

Grab the digestive help you get from apples by adding it with other ingredients into a smoothie.  All you need is:

  • 1 apple, core removed
  • 1 cup almond milk (or your favourite)
  • 14 spinach leaves (or a little less if you aren’t a fan)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup ice

Add everything to the blender and if the texture is still a little rough, run it through a fine sieve before you drink it.

Apple Pie Punch

If you are having a few friends around and want an apple punch, this one can be with or without added alcohol.  Take one apple and thinly slice it.  In a bowl or jug add four cups of apple cider, 2 cups of peach nectar and 3 cups of ginger beer.  If you want to give it some extra kick, add some vodka to taste.

Honey apple Ryder

There’s a little preparation for this one but it is worth it.  Slice some apples and add to a mason jar then pour over your favourite unflavoured gin.  Leave for three days until it turns a yellowish colour.  Take the apple gin and mix it with even amounts of vodka and half an ounce of Lillet blanc.  Add ice and a twist of lemon to garnish.

Spicy mulled apple cider

This slow cooker recipe is ideal for those cold fall days and would also work well around Christmas.  Plus, the kitchen will smell amazing.

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon apple cider
  • 1 orange, washed and sliced
  • 1 tsp whole cloves
  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup

Add everything to the slow cooker pot and stir.  Cook on the lowest setting for 3-4 hours until the taste is right then strain and serve warm.

Pumpkin spice – how to use it

If there’s one thing you can’t avoid in fall, it is talk of pumpkin spice, especially those latte drinks!  Now I’ll admit of the hot fall drinks, it isn’t one that jumps up as a favourite idea, but I know people love it.

And the pumpkin spice latte isn’t the only way to use pumpkin spice in your drinks.  Here are a few more ideas.

Pumpkin spice punch

I’m always a fan of punch when you are having people around because it is easy to make in big batches and people can help themselves.  This one is a great idea for a pumpkin flavour.  Take 3 ounces of cream soda and 2 ounces of pumpkin ice cream.  Stir and sprinkle with pumpkin spice.  If you want to make as a larger drink, simply multiply the numbers and for an alcoholic kick, add vodka.  You could even go for caramel vodka if you can find it to complement the flavour!

Pumpkin spice cocktail

This one is a take on a coffee drink but is a cold fall drink.  Take around 50 ounces of coffee and chill it almost to the point of being frozen.  Add 1 ounces of Kahlua, 1 ounce of vodka and ¾ cup of whipped cream.  Add pumpkin spice and serve with a little more cream on top.

Pumpkin Spice White Russian

The White Russian is a classic cocktail and this recipe gives it an autumn twist with pumpkin flavors and the spice.  You will need:

  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • ½ cup vodka
  • ½ cup Kahlua or other coffee liqueur
  • ½ tsp pumpkin spice

Mix the drink in a cocktail shaker with ice and add the spice to the top.  You can even try swapping the milk for different types such as almond milk for a unique flavour.

Pumpkin Spice Irish Coffee

For this Pumpkin Spice Irish Coffee, you can either make your own pumpkin spice with the instructions or use a favourite store bought version.

Pumpkin Pie Spice:

  • 3 T. cinnamon
  • 1 T. ground ginger
  • 1 T. ground nutmeg
  • 2 t. ground allspice
  • 2 t. ground cloves

Homemade Whipped Cream ingredients:

  • 16 oz. freshly brewed hot coffee

  • additional pumpkin pie spice, for garnish

in a large glass bowl, add the cream and blend until doubles in size.  Add the maple syrup and mix.

Before brewing the coffee, add the pumpkin spice and mix together.  Brew the coffee as normal.

Pour 2 ounces of the Irish cream into each cup and top with 4 ounces of coffee.  Add whipped cream and sprinkle pumpkin spice on top.

How to make a pumpkin protein shake

What about for fans of a good protein shake to boost your system?  Well, there’s no reason why you can’t include that on the list of the best fall drinks and go with a pumpkin protein shake.

To make the drink, you want to have a strong blender that can manage to mix pumpkin.  Then choose your ingredients.  You may not want to include all of these but some of the staples of a good protein shake include:

  • Pumpkin puree or fresh pumpkin
  • Your choice of protein powder
  • Honey or another sweetener
  • Almond milk
  • Homemade or store bought pumpkin spice
  • Banana
  • Vanilla extract

You can also add ice if your blender can handle it.  For a single portion, you will want a cup of milk, half a cup of pureed pumpkin, a banana and some ice.  Then add whatever other ingredients you want to enhance the flavour – topping with nuts like almonds as well as more pumpkin spice can work perfectly.

Juicing with fall vegetables

There are some good fall superfoods that are in season in the fall and there’s no reason not to include these in your juicing regime.  The aim is always to balance the fruit and vegetables, so the drink isn’t too sweet, and you don’t experience a sugar spike after it.  That’s why you often mix things like orange and carrot.

For a fall vegetables twist, you definitely want to include pumpkin.  With the amount of trace minerals and vitamins in it, pumpkin provides a boost to the body and aim to leave the seeds in when you blend as they add more health benefits.

Add some leafy green vegetables to pumpkin to offset the sweetness.  Go seasonal and choose fresh apples or pears or something like spinach.  You can also add citrus fruits if the mix seems a little bitter.

Finally, spices are both seasonal and super health with ginger topping the list.  Or you could use the recipe above to make your own pumpkin spice and add that for flavouring.

Fall punch recipe

Finally, if you are having people around and want to serve a classic fall punch recipe, here’s one for you.  Make this up and them either leave it as a non-alcoholic fall drink or add a favourite spirit such as whiskey or vodka to the mix.  This recipe will make 16 portions.

  • 2 oranges
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 ½ pints apple juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice
  • 17 Fl oz pineapple juice

Preheat the oven to 350F / 180C and stud the oranges with cloves, baking for 30 minutes.

In a saucepan, mix the cinnamon with apple juice and bring to the boil.  Cook on medium for 5 minutes, remove from the heat and add the nutmeg, lemon and pineapple juices.

In a warmed punch bowl, add the oranges and then pour in the rest of the drink mix to serve.
