Whether your goal is weight loss, eating healthy or simply achieving balance in your diet, fruit is your friend. Eating fruit for weight loss isn’t a new idea but the concept that fruits are not all created equally is a littler newer. So what are the best fruits to eat for weight loss and to get that healthy feeling?

The fruit diet
Firstly, let’s start by saying that too much of anything isn’t good for you so don’t go out and jump on a fruit diet where you eat only fruit and nothing much else. Balance is key to losing weight, feeling healthy and detoxing your system so make sure you combine fruit with all the other foods your body needs to get the right balance of essential elements.
Fruit has been shown to be one of the best foods for weight loss and one of the reasons for this is that it can fill you up and therefore stave off hunger and the urge to continue eating. Some fruits, such as watermelon, also have a high water content so you add hydration to the other benefits. This too helps with a full feeling and therefore can result in a smaller waistline or a better overall feeling.
Fruit smoothies and drinks
Another great thing about fruit is that you can use them in smoothies without losing a single gram of nutrition. In fact, if you are like me and don’t get along with the consistency of some fruits, then it is the best way to get all that nutrition. Simply look at what you want to achieve and see what fruits would be best to use in the smoothie – for example, weight loss smoothies, detox smoothies or simply a balance of all that fruity goodness.
Another way to get the benefits of fruit for weight loss is to use them to make infused water. This is really easy to do and there are some good bottles to help make the process even easier. One of the best fruits to include in an infused water recipe is lemon. There’s no doubting the benefits of lemon for weight loss, a healthier system and even to boost energy levels. Get a glass in first thing in the morning for a good start to the day.

So who are the top candidates to be included in your next fruit salad, smoothie or other dish? Which fruits raise their hands as offering themselves as natural weight loss foods and being full of nutritional powerhouses? Here are a few to inspire you.
We’ve all heard that bananas are full of potassium but so what? The reason that potassium is so important is that it can lower blood pressure levels and the banana has more of it than any other fruit. It is also a good source of fibre, Vitamin B6 and one medium banana contains around 100 calories.
I’ve talked before about the benefits of blueberries, of which there are loads! Just to recap though, the little fruit has the largest number of antioxidants of any fruit and these are the little things that fight off age related diseases as well as improving overall health.
There are lots of great things to do with cranberries and lots of reasons to do them. Rich in antioxidants, cranberries are great if you want to detox your system as they help the smooth operation of the kidneys, help prevent kidney stones and reduce the chance of urinary infections.
Goji berries are a great ingredient for smoothies as they come in dried fruit form and store for a long time. They are also full of good stuff including six vitamins and some 21 minerals. They are used in some traditional medicines around the world and some studies have shown they may help combat conditions such as diabetes and even cancer.
There are a few different types of grapefruit now available in all sorts of exotic colours and all of them have plenty of good stuff inside. They contain a large amount of Vitamin C, potassium and folic acid as well as Vitamin A and a phytochemical called lycopene that helps combat damage to the walls of the arteries.
Cleaning out your digestive tract not only makes you feel better but can help with gut health and papaya is great for this. It contains something called papain that is a digestion-aiding enzyme as well as having lots of Vitamin A to maintain healthy skin – if you look good, you often feel good too.
Ever wondered why we eat pineapple with gammon? One answer might be that it contains an enzyme called bromelain which breaks down protein and therefore makes meat easier to digest. The same stuff also helps to avoid blood clots and helps heal wounds quickly. So not only a good fruit for weight loss but one to help recover after an accident too.
As the name suggests, watermelon is full of water, in fact around 90% of the average fruit is H2O. This means that you get a jolt of hydration from each slice and it is also very low in calories – 100 grams of watermelon only contains 30 calories. It also has an amino acid called arginine that is great for burning off fat.
Fruit brings a stack of goodness to every meal or drink and also tastes great. You should always be a little careful if you are any medication as some advise against certain fruits (goji berries when on Warfarin or blood thinners, for example). But otherwise, fruit is a great way to detox your system, boost your body’s natural resources and help with weight loss.
