Healthy benefits of papaya
Papaya is a tropical fruit that was originally grown in Central America and Southern Mexico but is now found in other tropical parts of the world.
You can eat the fresh fruits raw when it is ripe but make sure you cook it when it is unripe as there’s something in it called latex which isn’t so pleasant. In fact, in pregnant women it is known to stimulate contractions so probably keep away from the uncooked stuff entirely if that’s you!

Papaya is tasty but also has some solid health benefits that qualifies it as a healthy breakfast ingredient. These include:
- Lots of antioxidants that can neutralise free radicals and help with a variety of conditions
- Contains something called lycopene that helps to reduce cancer risks
- This and vitamin C in the fruit also helps to prevent heart disease
- Contains papain which helps the digestive process
What you need
How to make Papaya Breakfast Bowls
Slice the papaya in half lengthwise
Grab a large spoon and scoop out the seeds as these are edible but quite bitter
Mix the fruit and yoghurt together and split into two then fill each half of the papaya
Recipe tips
Another great thing about these stuffed papaya bowls is that there are a few ways you can serve them.
One option is to replace the raspberries in the main recipe with coconut flakes. Go for lightly toasted, unsweetened ones (or toast them yourself) and add with the blueberries and chia seeds.

For another variation that isn’t a 5 ingredient recipe but packs some serious taste punch, add blackberries and coconut flakes to the original recipe and top with some coconut yoghurt (or another flavour you prefer). You can even garnish with a mint sprig!

Finally, if you want to go beyond just plain chia seeds, consider something like a mixed seed blend. Look for ones that include chia seeds and add things like flax and hemp to increase goodness levels.
Whichever combination of ingredients you use (and you can definitely add in your own favourites) the basic process remains the same. Just add in those extras at the stage where the fruit is added.
